With students around the country celebrating the end of their final term, here are ten tracks to get you in the mood for Graduation. Warning – tedious links are to be expected.
Enter Shikari – Anything Can Happen in the Next Half Hour.
Never underestimate what can happen during the ceremony itself. Whether it be slapstick styles falls after standing on your own ceremonial robes, or names being tragically pronounced wrong, expect the unexpected.
Head Automatica – Graduation Day
There have been surprisingly few rock tracks directly written about Graduation, but there is no doubt about this song’s content matter, although if you are struggling to work out why this song is present you probably aren’t graduating anyway.
Supergrass – Alright
Graduation doesn’t have to mark the end of youthful exuberance, it may in fact be seen as a celebration of the friends you’ve made throughout the greatest years of your life.
Foo Fighters – My Hero
Graduation wouldn’t be the same without parents being there, as they witness the proudest moments of their lives. If you want to refer to yourself as their ‘hero’ then this track fits wonderfully.
Oasis – Don’t Look Back in Anger
Yes, you may not have got the grades you wanted, and yes this may be the last time you get the chance to roll out of bed at mid-day without feeling even a twinge of guilt, but always look back on your time at university positively.
Close Your Eyes – Friends are Friends Forever
Although With a Little Help From My Friends by The Beatles may fit perfectly here, that would have been far too obvious a choice. The important thing to remember is nothing is more important than friends, and you will have made some great ones during your time at university.
Avenue Q Cast – I Wish I Could Go Back to College
Everyone, no matter what their circumstances, will at some point wish they could sack in their job and go back to living the student life again. Make the most of the time between now and graduation, you may never get to live like this again.
Bon Jovi – It’s My Life
So what’s next? It may be employment, another year in education or even a gap year – whatever life has in store make sure you live it to the fullest, otherwise you will have Bon Jovi to answer to.
Alter Bridge – Brand New Start
Emotions will be running high at your graduation, that is a guarantee. By no means is leaving university the end of it all though, it is just the beginning of the rest of your life. Granted employment may seem daunting in comparison to attending a couple of lectures a week, but it can’t last forever.
Green Day – Good Riddance (Time of your life)
Although written about the end of a relationship, rather than leaving university, Green Day may have summed up the graduation experience perfectly – “It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right, I hope you had the time of your life.”
