Last night saw the continuation of Alter Bridge’s European tour at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff with support from Theory of a Deadman and Black Stone Cherry.
Although I arrived at the venue after Canadian rockers Theory of a Deadman, the crowd of people milling around outside the venue and within the confines of the merch store suggested that I hadn’t missed much.
The atmosphere picked up with the introduction of Black Stone Cherry though, with lead-singer Chris Robertson encapsulating both the crowd which had already formed and those who entered the arena late.
Given close to an hour to warm the crowd up for the headliners, Black Stone Cherry didn’t disappoint. Hammering through 15 tracks, spanning all three of their albums, as well as three unexpected cover versions (Iron Man – Black Sabbath, Rolling in the Deep – Adele & Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd) it was truly a set worthy of a headline slot. That said, there was only ever going to be one band stealing the show, and Alter Bridge did just that.
From the first chord of Slip to the Void through to the epic finale Rise Today, Frontman Myles Kennedy had the crowd in the palm of his hand. This was never more true than the two track acoustic section, introduced with an anecdote reminiscing of times spent playing in coffee shops. Kennedy, with nothing more than his guitar and the stool he was sat on, performed Wonderful Life and Watch Over you alone, encouraging a 7,000 strong sing-along, lighters aloft.
The rest of the set was typical Alter Bridge; Kennedy’s soaring, pitch perfect vocals floating over Mark Tremonti’s huge riffs. If the reception that was afforded to Broken Wings raised the roof, then Metallingus brought the house down!
But the best was saved for the end. The likes of Before Tomorrow Comes and Isolation closing the set before the encore saw the perfect one-two shot of Alter Bridge’s first single Open Your Eyes and Rise Today acting as the perfect parting gift.
If you get the opportunity to catch Alter Bridge live, then don’t miss it!
5/5

Hey! I was at this gig! Loved it (Although I thought BSC gave a slightly stronger performance than AB) – although I’ve been going to gig all over for near on 15 years now and I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a tame crowd as the folk from Cardiff. Great Post

Have you seen Alter Bridge before? If so then how did they perform up to usual standards? I have to say I was impressed by BSC, especially their cover of Rolling in the Deep which was surprisingly strong! How did you rate Theory of a Deadman?
Posted by liveandloudrock | December 2, 2011, 21:22I have seen Alterbridge once before and BSC on two other occasion, both are amazing live acts. TOADM was okay, The sound quality wasn’t great and I personally didn’t think they matched well with the other two bands – I’d like to see them independently sometime, to make a real judgement.
Posted by Creature with the Atom Brain | December 2, 2011, 21:41Awesome, well I will definitely be seeing Alter Bridge again if I get the chance! Definitely in the top 3 gigs I have ever attended, after Foo Fighters @ Milton Keynes Bowl this summer and Biffy Clyro at Wembley Arena last December. I can’t say I am the biggest fan of Theory of a Deadman and I managed to miss them due to not knowing the door time had changed from 7pm to 6pm. Doesn’t sound like I missed a lot though! What do you think of the blog as a whole? Any improvements you can think of, or maybe suggestions for articles?
Posted by liveandloudrock | December 2, 2011, 21:49Na, It looks great mate, very professional and well written. Infact, Ill share this article on my facebook for a bit of promo. I have loads of friends that love AB and BSC.
Posted by Creature with the Atom Brain | December 2, 2011, 22:36Thanks! That would be great!! Here is a link to the facebook page for the blog as well. Any suggestions for articles or albums you would like to see reviewed are more than welcome. In fact there will soon be a few countdowns appearing on the blog (Top albums of 2011 and Alternative Christmas tracks possibly) so I will be appealing for suggestions on Facebook soon I would imagine. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Live-and-Loud-Rock/274044319306090?sk=wall
